Good to Know
- Fake: what you checked is pretending to be someone it isn't, and the answer shows how. Don't pay, sign in or reply. It's about what you checked, not the business it copies, and it links to the real one.
- Very Likely a Scam: it has the marks of a scam. Don't send money, codes or passwords.
- Be Careful: something worries us, or nothing shows who's behind it. Check with them another way first, using contacts you found yourself.
- Be Careful, with "nothing we checked points to a scam": we found nothing against it, and only couldn't tell how long it's been around, or part of the check couldn't run just now. It isn't a warning.
- Looks Genuine: nothing we checked points to a scam. The answer lists what we checked. It isn't a guarantee: a real site can be hacked, and a real name can be copied.
- What We Couldn't Check lists anything that didn't answer in time or isn't published. The answer then rests on what did. Ghana's .gh registry doesn't publish how old a domain is, for example, and that doesn't count against a site: the registry asks for company registration documents or national identification before it gives a .gh address, so one can look genuine without a date.
- Screenshots and emails are deleted as soon as the check is done. Our AI provider reads them for the check. Blank out anything private you don't need checked, such as your own account number.
- Pasted email headers help, but anyone can type them, so they can raise a concern and never clear an email.
- We open links inside an email without the part after the question mark, so checking an email never presses a link meant for you.
- A link checked earlier today gets the same answer at no cost, and doesn't count towards your checks.
- Nothing you check becomes a public warning by itself. A trained moderator decides, and they never see what you uploaded. To tell us what happened to you, select Report It.
- For a phone number or an @handle, use Check Before You Pay, which doesn't need an account.
If Something Goes Wrong
- "Facebook links need a screenshot" or "X links need a screenshot." They don't let us read their pages. Take a screenshot of the page or the message, and select Add a Screenshot.
- "That's all your checks for today." You can make 20 new checks a day, up to 10 of them screenshots or emails. You can check more tomorrow.
- "That's a lot of checks from this connection in an hour." Try again a little later.
- "We couldn't read this picture." Try a clearer screenshot, or paste the link or email instead. It hasn't been counted.
- The scam checker is resting. It's paused for a short while. Check Before You Pay still works.
- You think an answer about your own website is wrong. Answers are about what we can find today. Claim your page on Agoo Reviews and add your website so we can tell it's yours. If a warning shows, ask us to look again.
- You already paid someone. Call your network's fraud line, then the police and the Cyber Security Authority, then report it.
