Place a Legal Hold

Stop scheduled deletion and erasure of records during an investigation, a dispute or a regulator's request.

  • Plans: Enterprise only
  • Updated 27 October 2026

  1. Go to ConsoleSettingsData & privacy.

  2. Under Legal holds, select Place a legal hold.
  3. Choose What it covers: the whole organisation, a site, a person or a visitor. For a person or visitor, search by name or phone number.

  4. Give a Reason, such as the matter or request it's for.
  5. Select Place the hold.

Nothing it covers is deleted on schedule or erased until you lift it.

Good to Know

  • Lift ends a hold when it's no longer needed.
  • Placing and lifting a hold are recorded in the audit trail. Owners and Admins see the reason.
  • If you change plan, holds you placed stay until you lift them.

If Something Goes Wrong

  • There's no Place a legal hold button. Legal holds come with Enterprise, and Owners and Admins place them.
  • A visitor's data couldn't be erased. It's under a legal hold. Lift the hold first if erasing is now right.
